Clean Development Mechanism
Promethium assists clients in identifying Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) opportunities and developing these to a stage where the carbon emission reduction (CER) credits generated can be sold.
CDM is an arrangement under the Kyoto Protocol allowing industrialised countries with a greenhouse gas reduction commitment under the Protocol to offset reduction obligations by investing in projects that reduce emissions in developing countries. Registered CDM projects earn CERs, which are equivalent to one ton of CO2.
An important aspect of an approved CDM carbon project is that it has established that the planned project would not occur without the additional incentive provided by emission reductions credits. This is referred to as the “additionality” requirement.
CDM projects must be registered at the Executive Board (EB) of the CDM. The registration process involves a rigorous and public process designed to ensure real, measurable and verifiable emission reductions.
The Kyoto Protocol is effective until 2012 after which it will be replaced by the Copenhagen Agreement to be agreed upon by the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen (http://en.cop15.dk) in December 2009.
We offer a range of CDM-related services which include:
- CDM project identification and viability studies;
- All aspects of CDM project development;
- System readiness reviews for CDM projects approaching Verification;
- Advisory work on CDM monetising strategies.
- Development of CDM methodologies.
After registration of a CDM project, a successful annual verification of the project is required in order to request issuance of Certified Emission Reductions (CER). Promethium assisted Corobrik with the verification at the Lawley brick factory and the 2006 credits have been issued. These were the first credits issued in Southern Africa. Subsequently the 2007 and 2008 credits are currently in the process of being issued.
CDM Methodologies
Promethium assists clients in the development of new CDM methodologies.
Description
All CDM projects must be developed according to approved methodologies. If an approved methodology for a project does not exist, one must be developed.
Promethium has the following experience in developing and revising CDM methodologies.
- Successful revision of small scale methodology II D Energy efficiency and fuel switching measures for industrial facilities
- Successful development of new small scale methodology III.W. Methane capture and destruction in non-hydrocarbon mining activities
- Successful development of large scale methodology AM0064 “Methodology for methane capture and utilisation or destruction in underground, hard rock, precious and base metal mines”
- Awaiting response on request for revision submitted for large scale methodology AM0047 “Production of biodiesel based on waste oils and/or waste fats from biogenic origin and/or oil from oilseeds for use as fuel”
- Awaiting response on request for new methodology “Methodology for the production of a cement extender from slag and/or the increase in energy efficiency in the production of base metal alloys through the recovery of metal from the slag, as well as the increasing the blend in cement”
