Promethium assists clients in completing their Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) (http://www.cdproject.net/) submissions.
CDP is a global non-profit organisation, formed in 2000 and based in the United Kingdom. Its mission is to collect and distribute high quality information that motivates investors, corporations and governments to take action in the attempt to mitigate climate change.
In the present carbon-constrained age, CDP highlights and demonstrates the importance of risks and opportunities related to climate change. The CDP plays a vital role in encouraging companies, private and public sector organisations, to measure, manage and reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and consequently their impact on climate change.
Each year the CDP issues Information Requests (CDP Questionnaire) to more than 3,700 corporations across the globe on behalf of 475 institutional investors (with a combined $55 trillion under management), more than 35 purchasing organisations and government bodies.
The CDP requests the following information from corporations:
- Risks and opportunities associated with climate change and their implications;
- Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting;
- Performance against targets and plans to reduce GHG emissions; and
- Responsibility and management approach to climate change
The process of data collection provides management with new insight into reducing carbon emissions and, with CDP, the private and public sectors have a clear framework and a neutral forum within which to report and discuss the development of climate change strategies. It assists concerned investors who want to know whether the companies they are investing in are adequately taking account of climate change risks. It also provides a better understanding of how companies are positioned in relation to the risks and commercial opportunities associated with the transition to a low carbon economy.
The data is made available to a wide audience including: policymakers and their advisers, investors, corporations, academics and the public, in order to raise awareness and advance expertise.
In 2009, over 2000 companies participated world-wide. In South Africa, 68 of the JSE top 100 companies participated (up from 59 in 2008).
Promethium is able to offer a comprehensive offering to companies whereby we can complete or assist with their CDP submissions. This service can include the calculation of the company’s carbon footprint, which forms part of the submission. It also includes assessment of risks and opportunities and can lead to the development of a carbon strategy. In addition emission reduction opportunities can be identified which could result in CER or VER revenues.
Promethium Carbon has assisted a number of companies with their responses to CDP 2008. Of these, Gold Fields, Exxaro, Remgro and Medi-Clinic made it into the Climate Leadership Disclosure Index Top 10 of their respective categories.
This year, Promethium has again assisted a number of companies with their 2009 CDP responses. Of these, Gold Fields, Exxaro and Anglo Platinum made it into the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index of the JSE100. |
