Promethium offers carbon neutral services to clients.
Carbon neutrality refers to a state where the GHG emissions of a company or section of a company is offset by a project that reduces a similar amount of greenhouse gas emissions.
To become carbon neutral is a strategic decision which can result in commercial benefits. This decision is usually made once a company’s carbon footprint has been determined. A company will then manage, reduce and ultimately offset the greenhouse gas emissions released as a result of their operations.
The first step towards becoming carbon neutral is to obtain a credible carbon footprint. Next, companies must reduce their carbon footprint. Some examples of reduction opportunities include:
- Energy efficiency: achieve the same performance / service with less energy.
- Business process and employee engagement: changes in working practices which reduce travel and energy use.
- Renewable energy: on company property and/or purchased from suppliers.
The final step in becoming carbon neutral is to offset the remainder of the carbon footprint. The carbon footprint is offset either through project-based emission reductions such as the installation of solar geysers, the purchase of Voluntary Emission Reductions or through carbon sequestration initiatives such as tree planting.
The integrity of an offset project is dependent on five criteria as set by the World Bank:
- the additionality of the project (making sure the project is not claiming reductions that would occur anyway),
- the actual existence of the emission reductions (making sure the project activity is monitored and that emissions reductions are verified),
- the exclusion of double-counting (making sure the same emission reductions are not claimed by more than one entity),
- the permanence of the reduction (making sure the emission reductions are not temporary) and
- the existence of community benefits.
Once carbon neutral, a company can become carbon positive by influencing its employees, customers and suppliers to reduce and offset their carbon footprints.
Promethium can assist clients to determine their carbon footprint. We can identify which energy reduction opportunities would qualify for carbon credits and assist clients to register these projects as CDM projects. We can also suggest and assist in identifying and choosing appropriate offsetting options.
Promethium has offset its own carbon footprint since 2007.
